HELIO OITICICA

The work, across various media, of the Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica has continued to be shown internationally since the artist’s death in 1980 at the age of 42.

In October, 2009, a fire at the Rio de Janeiro residence of the artist’s brother César Oiticica, where the collection was stored, destroyed many of Helio’s works. Shorty thereafter, César and family, with help from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, initiated a project to restore the work, and hired Ross Art Studio to re-create several glass vessels, including the mercury cell batteries, which were in use in the early 20th Century.

An exhibition of the restored work, "Helio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium" was shown in 2017, successively at The Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.  Galerie LeLong represents the artist.
